I'm in this movie, and I think that they did an excellent job. They have many friends and peers of mine - Jeff Chang, Chuck D (who appeared on my album "Drums of Death"), Clyde Stubblefiend, the drummer for James Brown, and many others. I HIGHLY recommend this film for anyone who is interested in digital culture.!
Antarctica, the only uninhabited continent, belongs to no single country and has no government. While certain countries lay claim to portions of the landmass, it is the only solid land on the planet with no unified national affiliation. Drawing on the continent’s rich history of inspiring exploration and artistic endeavors, Paul D. Miller a.k.a. DJ Spooky has put together his own multimedia, multidisciplinary study of Antactica. Book of Ice is one aspect of this ongoing project.
In light of climate change and tireless human enterprise to be present everywhere on the planet, Miller uses Antarctica as a point on entry for contemplating humanity’s relationship with the natural world. The two additional contributors to The Book Of Ice - Columbia University's Brian Greene, best selling author of The Elegant Universe, and Ross A. Virginia, Director of Arctic Studies at Dartmouth College, a world renowned expert on Antarctica - add several layers of analysis to the books exploration of the theme of science and graphic design.
Using photographs and film stills from his journey to the bottom of the world, along with original artworks and re-appropriated archival materials, Miller ponders how Antarctica could liberate itself from the rest of the world. Part fictional manifesto, part history and part science book, Book of Ice furthers Miller’s reputation as an innovative artist capable of making the old look new.

THE VANUATU PACIFICA FOUNDATION and TANNA CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Vanuatu is a four-hour flight from Sydney
For centuries, the Naihné People of Tanna have lived on this island in Vanuatu's southern-most province, Tafea.
In late 2009, their leadership invited Paul D. Miller (aka DJ Spooky) to form an artists retreat within their remote eastern territory.
In early 2011, Vanuatu Pacifica Foundation will begin building Tanna Center for the Arts in this beautiful and isolated part of the island. The artists retreat will function as a carbon negative, culturally supportive demonstration model, incorporating a digital media lab and island-restorative education center to aid the goals expressed by the people of this tropical paradise.
The Voice Project www.voiceproject.org
The Voice Project collaborates with musicians and artists to bring awareness to the plight of child soldiers in Central Africa, and it uses song to create bridges of understanding between different artists, cultures, and compositional styles. I worked with the up and coming classical music star, Joshua Roman to do a commisioned cover of Radiohead's classic "Everything in its Right Place" - you can see the beautiful result here. The session was recorded at my home studio in Tribeca (sorry for the zillions of books and records, but hey...). Anna Gabriel (Peter Gabriel's wonderful daughter) recorded the session and is the force behind The Voice Project. She has done sessions like this with the likes of Billy Bragg, Angelique Kidjo, Emmanuel Jal, Bedouin Soundclash, and many others. Check out the video, and support their cause.

Artist Statement:
JG Ballard once said "history is a stage that needs to be swept clean." I agree. When I first heard Grand Master Flash's "Adventures on the Wheels of Steel" from 1981, I was blown away. Afrika Bambaata's "Death Mix" was cool, but Flash took things in a whole different direction. //ARTIST STATEMENT AND TRACK LIST HERE //DJ Spooky iPhone App

DJ Spooky and Chuck D (Public Enemy)
Remix of By the Time I Get to Arizona
In the wake of Republican Governor Jan Brewer's appalling anti-immigrant law, me and Chuck D were rappin' and we decided to put together an update of his classic track By The Time I get To Arizona. Anyone who knows about hip hop from the early 90's remembers John McCain's unwillingness to endorse creating a local version of Martin Luther King's birthday. The update here is a 21st century look in the rear view mirror. The cliché that "those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it" still holds sway in our hyper amnesiac culture. I remixed D.W. Griffith's infamous film Birth of a Nation with a bit of Public Enemy in mind, and later on, they named an e.p. with the same name as my project. Me and Chuck D have done several projects in the past around progressive, non knucklehead hip hop.
Please feel free to download this track and pass it around. We are the media. Feel free to pass it around!
By the way, this is a mashup, and it's basically not really for sale. I just took a riff from Philly Sound (www.funkadelphiarecords.com), and flipped it. The result, is what you hear here. It's free, and open. No $!!
in peace,
Paul aka DJ Spooky

The Secret Song– isnʼt really an album: itʼs a manifesto about the place of history in our modern collaged, scrambled, sampla-delic to the core, mega info overloaded digital culture. With references stretching from Thorstein Veblenʼs “Theory of the Leisure Class” and John Maynard Keynes classic in the field of economics “The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money” over to hip hopʼs relationship to psychoanalysis and a la Edward Bernayʼs concept of the “manufacture of consent” – DJ Spookyʼs new album is a groundbreaking meditation on hip hop and electronic musics relationship to philosophy, economics, //LISTEN TO THE ALBUM ON
AOL MUSIC (SPINNER)and the science of sound in a world where the steady drumbeat of the financial meltdown has made music the last refuge of young people with less and less time and money. DJ Spookyʼs peer group of artists like DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, RJD2, DJ Logic, Amon Tobin, and Coldcut have all played with the idea of concept albums. With “The Secret Song” DJ Spooky looks to bands like Nine Inch Nails, and Radiohead for inspiration. As DJ Spooky likes to say "people - it's ALL about economics." Dig?
TERRA NOVA: Sinfonia Antarctica
In December 2007 and January 2008 Paul D. Miller aka went to Antarctica to shoot a film and make a large scale multimedia performance work that will be an acoustic portrait of a rapidly changing continent called Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica. Sinfonia Antarctica transforms Miller’s first person encounter with the harsh, dynamic landscape of Antarctica into multimedia portraits with music composed from the different geographies that make up the land mass. It's about the environment, sound, hip hop, electronic music and what it means to be a composer in the 21st century.
